Create Your Own Leafy Stepping Stones

With the arrival of autumn, it is great opportunity to point out all the different colors and shapes of autumn leaves to the kids. Think of the love heart shaped beech and the serrated chestnut forms, with deep lined wrinkles on the surface.

The texture and shape of the leaves, inspired me to create one very large leaf - the Rhubarb leaf - and using white cement to create sweet stepping stones for in the garden. Hardwearing with a natural texture, these stepping stones are sweet additions to a garden - especially with kids - and are super easy to do.

What you need

  1. A bag of ready-to-go cement mix - I used the white 'Handi Mix variety from Woodie's. The 3kg bag makes two chunky stepping stones or three thinner ones.
  2. Rhubarb Leaves - As many leaves as you want stepping stones.
  3. Old Cake tins - Use tins with removable sides. I had two different sizes which is very pretty.
  4. Water
  5. Gloves - I would advise using these as cement can irritate your skin.
  6. A Bucket
  7. Cling Flim
  8. A Knife - Use this for cutting the rhubarb leaf

Preparing your Cake Tins

Step 1.

To prepare the cake tins, line them in cling film, making sure all areas are covered. Then take your rhubarb leaf and lay it face up in the table with the shiny side up.

Step 2.

Place the cake tin base on on top of your leaf and use the knife to cut the leaf into the circle.

Step 3.

Lift off for a moment to oput the cling film sheets in between the leaf and tin top.

Step 4.

Turn it around so that now you've got the cake tin base at the bottom, then the cling film and the the leaf. The leaf will be showing the spiny underside - this is what you want as it will make some really cool impressions in the concrete.

Step 5.

To make it easier to remove you can spread some vaseline on the leaf - especially the spine as it can get a little tricky to get out when dry.

Step 6.

Put the base of the cake tin into the ring. Basically as though you are ready to pur a cake mix in.

How to create the mix

Step 1.

Empty your cement mix into the bucket and stir in water.

Step 2.

Keep stirring until a smooth thick consistency has formed.

Step 3.

Pour your mix into your cake base and even out using a spatula

Step 4.

Leave to set in a dry place for about 24 hours. Carefully remove the 'cement' cake by tipping the base upside down.

Step 5.

Remove the cling film and pull off the leaf

Now you have a revealed a stunning leaf moulded stepping stone which looks so beatiful in the lawn. They also look stunning hung on the wall. Just add hooks to the back and they become your very own art works. It really is that simple so get creating!!
