Festive Decorating Ideas Inspired by Christmas Movies

This Christmas why not take inspiration from some festive film favourites when it comes to decorating your home. Check out some of our ideas below on how you can completely transform your living space to reflect some of our top Christmas movie picks.

Miracle on 34th Street

To kick us off, why not draw some inspiration from one of the biggest Christmas movie classics, Miracle on 34th Street. Whether you're a fan of the 1947 original or the 1994 remake, nothing says traditional Christmas decor like this movie. Consider this when using it as a decorating theme. Try using traditional reds, greens and golds, a big fluffy tree, and lots of lovely warm and inviting decor. Don't forget to pop in a couple of Santas to really tie in with the theme of the film.

Elf

Arguably one of the funniest Christmas movies out there, Elf is a great film to provoke some very fun decorating ideas for the festive season. Yellow and green decorations, like tree ornaments and lights, will reflect Buddy the Elf's costume. While candy striped decor will evoke Buddy's sweet tooth. Train sets, nutcrackers and other classic Christmas toys will make your home look like the elves' workshop. Add in some Santas, snowmen and elves to complete the look.

Love Actually

A strong contender for favourite Christmas romantic comedy, Love Actually is another festive film you could use as a decorating theme. In terms of colours, look at using reds, whites and silvers. Drawing inspiration from the school Christmas show and fictional rock and roll legend Billy Mack, try incorporating some musical ornaments and decorations into your festive decor. Since the film focuses on love, make sure to bring lots of warm, fuzzy feelings into your home with soft textiles like cushions and throws, some festive candles, and plenty of plush decorations. Add some floristry with pops of red and some mistletoe to finish off the look.

The Grinch

Another funny festive family favourite, The Grinch can provide some great ideas for Christmas decorating. Lots of green decorations and ornaments with some red and white thrown in the mix will embody the Grinch himself. Add in some fluffy textures to really seal the deal. Whoville is a fantastic source of inspiration too. A fun, over-the-top tree and lots of festive lighting will rival all the Whos' fabulous decorations. Channel the natural landscape of the Grinch's home with some green, fluffed up floristry like garlands and wreaths. Take inspiration from the mail room scene by including a festive post box or two in your decor this Christmas.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Use Nightmare Before Christmas as inspiration for something a little different when it comes to your festive decorating this year. Try out a gothic theme for your Christmas tree, inspired by Jack Skellington, using darker baubles like greys and blacks with pops of white and silver. Keep the rest of your decor very minimal, following the same colour palette as your tree. A pop of colour here or there will add some brightness and gives a nod to one of the main characters, Sally. For lighting, stick to the minimalist look with some icy white lights for the most part. Try out our light up copper bauble garland to acknowledge the Pumpkin King himself in a different way.

The Holiday

A rival for best festive rom-com with Love Actually, The Holiday is a great source for Christmas decorating ideas. Our favourite part of the film to draw inspiration from is the stunning English cottage belonging to Kate Winslet’s character, Iris. Think, rustic, woodsy décor like wooden ornaments, deer and lots of floristry. Add some warmth like cosy cushions and throws with a few candles. This is a great theme to choose if you have a fireplace or two, so focus on decorating this area in particular. Some draping garlands, festive lighting, a wreath, and maybe even a Christmas themed bucket for your firewood, turf or coal would be perfect. Finish the look with some stunning festive tea sets.

Gremlins

Channel Gremlins this Christmas with messy and chaotic decorating. Think multicoloured tinsel strewn from the ceilings and mismatched ornaments on the tree. Don't forget lots of bright lights to stun any unwanted Gremlins that may appear at your home after midnight looking for mince pies! Some classic festive toys like nutcrackers and train sets will channel the scene where the Gremlins run wild in the toy store. Lots of musical decorations and light up ornaments will add to the chaotic look and feel of this theme.

Deck The Halls

One of the more recent festive family favourites, Deck The Halls, inspires masses of fun lighting and displays, especially outside your home. Think over-the-top decorations with loads of fairy lights and silhouettes. Throw in a Christmas light projector or two to really standout from your neighbours. For added emphasis on your festive lighting, why not place a heavily lit Christmas tree directly in the front window for all to see!

White Christmas

Another Christmas classic, White Christmas, is great for providing that truly magical snowy and frosted festive feel. Take inspiration from this movie to create the perfect winter wonderland at home. Try this by using frosted and snow-covered decorations, like silver, white and clear ornaments, artificial snow spray, silver glitter, and snowmen. Since White Christmas is a musical, why not add in some musical ornaments and decorations too? Throw in some traditional red and white textured items, reminiscent of the film's costumes, to complete the look.

Home Alone

Last but not least, Home Alone is another fantastic film to get ideas for Christmas decorating from. As a kid-centric movie, why not channel some of your favourite childhood Christmas memories to help with your decorating? Throw in plenty of plush items, train sets and toys, a massive Christmas tree, and lots of colour to create the perfect festive look inspired by Home Alone.
