Fleetwood Weekend Projects: Mini Interior Refreshes

Make the most of a free weekend by taking on a weekend project with Fleetwood! For your next free weekend, why not tackle a refresh of your old furniture, home office, and your staircase spindles and bannisters? Read on below for a guide on how to do each.

Spruce Up Your Staircase Spindles & Bannisters

Give your staircase spindles and bannisters the makeover it deserves by following Fleetwood's steps below.

Step 1

Start by covering any surrounding surfaces with dust sheets and securing them with Fleetwood Low Tack Washi Tape. If there are any nails sticking out, ensure that you knock them into the wood using a hammer.

Step 2

Lightly sand over the wood before you start painting to ensure a rough base for the paint to stick to. After, vacuum the bannister and wash lightly with a damp cloth to remove any access dirt.

Step 3

Prime your bannister with Fleetwood Water-Based Pure Grip Primer and Fleetwood Pro D 4" brush. Start at the top of your staircase and work your way down. Ensure that you are covering all of the wood as you work through it. It is recommended you leave the primer to dry for at least 4 hours before applying your paint.

Step 4

Now it’s time for the fun part – choosing your paint colour. Fleetwood Advanced Paint range offers different finishes with excellent adhesion and a variety of colours to choose from. The same way as priming – start at the top of the stairs and work your way down. Apply a second coat if you feel it’s needed.

Add Style to Your Office Nook with Colour Blocking

Follow the steps below to refresh your home office area with Fleetwood.

Step 1

Start by cleaning your surface. Wipe down the walls to be painted in order to remove any dust and dirt. Rinse the walls with clean water to remove soap residue.

Step 2

Protect your carpet by laying down a dust sheet. Use washi tape along the skirting to stop any brush marks or drips. Washi tape is best for these projects as it is low tack and pulls away easily without damaging the walls.

Step 3

Using a pencil and a ruler create your shape on the wall. Apply tape to the pencil lines. This will keep the lines clean when you pull it away.

Step 4

Now for the fun part! Use your brush for edging along the lines, as well as the ceiling and skirting, in your chosen colours. A roller can then be used to quickly fill in the rest. Apply your second coat about an hour later and there you have it! When the paint is dry start to pull back the tape. Now enjoy your creation!

Refresh Old Furniture

Learn how to freshen up old furniture using a coat of paint below with Fleetwood.

Step 1

Give the surface a good clean with a mix of 50% methylated spirits and 50% water. Spray the solution directly onto the surface you intend to paint. Wipe clean with a cloth and sand to ensure an even surface.

Step 2

Apply Fleetwood oil-based Bloxx-It or water-based Pure Grip Primer using a brush, roller, or sprayer. Let the primer dry and, if necessary, give the surface a very light sand to remove any rough spots or drips.

Step 3

Once you have primed your surface and let it dry, apply your top coat of Fleetwood Advanced. Apply thin, even coats and let each coat dry completely before applying the next.

Step 4

Wait 24-48 hours before using your newly painted piece of furniture and then watch the compliments roll in!
