Woodie’s Heroes Fundraising for Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland

Meet Ciaran And Faro
For nine-year-old Ciarán Dawson from Lusk, Co. Dublin, everyday outings were once a source of anxiety for his family. As a pre-verbal autistic child and a flight risk, simple activities such as going for a walk, using public transport or visiting the shops required constant vigilance.
Today, thanks to Autism Assistance Dog Faro, life looks very different.
Through Woodie's Heroes, Ciarán is helping to shine a light on the life-changing work of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland and the difference an assistance dog can make to children and families across Ireland.
Before being matched with Faro, Ciarán's parents, Jennifer and Justin, spent years advocating for the support their son needed following his autism diagnosis during the pandemic. Like many families, they faced long waiting lists and challenges accessing services before receiving their assistance dog.
Faro has transformed everyday life for the entire family. Ciarán has gained greater independence, while his parents have greater confidence knowing he is safe. Together, they can now enjoy experiences that once felt out of reach, from family walks and shopping trips to holidays.
Ciarán's dad Justin says, "The difference Faro has made has been incredible. Simple things like going into shops or travelling as a family became much easier. He gives Ciarán independence, confidence and calmness, and has opened up experiences that we never thought would be possible."
The impact extends beyond Ciarán alone. His younger sister, Roisin, has been able to enjoy more family time and experiences alongside her brother, while everyday life has become less stressful for everyone.
"Having an Autism Assistance Dog has completely changed our family's life," Justin adds. "We could be walking down the street and then Ciarán would drop on the floor. What looked like a meltdown was simply sensory overload. Faro has given us more than support - he has given us freedom, safety and a way back into the world."
Every donation to Woodie's Heroes helps charities like Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland continue providing life-changing support to familiesacross Ireland.

Working with your hands is one of the most rewarding ways to improve your home, and for me, that comes through woodworking, DIY, and gardening. I’ve always been drawn to carpentry, especially the process of turning raw materials into something practical, durable, and well-crafted. Whether it’s building furniture or taking on smaller projects around the house, I value precision and doing things properly. Gardening brings the same satisfaction in a different way. From planning layouts to growing and shaping outdoor spaces, it’s about creating environments that feel natural, balanced, and inviting. At their core, DIY and gardening are about the same thing: improving your space through a hands-on, thoughtful approach that delivers lasting results.
